On Friday 31 October, Provincial Executive Member Esther Rommel officially opened the new Texel Walking Network, accompanied by music from walking ambassador and guitarist Tim Knol. With the addition of 250 kilometres of walking trails, the North Holland Walking Network now covers the entire province.

Esther Rommel, Provincial Executive Member for Tourism and Recreation: “With the completion of the junction network on Texel, our aim of creating a fully connected provincial walking network has been realised. This is good news for the more than 10 million Dutch people who enjoy walking. Whether it’s a short stroll in the neighbourhood or a longer walk, it’s all possible in North Holland and, from today, on the beautiful Wadden Sea island of Texel too. Thanks to this new section of the network, walkers can now explore the island even better: at their own pace and whilst appreciating nature.”

Walking fun across the whole island
The new walking network on Texel forms a rich web of routes spread across the whole island. This allows residents, day-trippers and tourists to explore and discover the island. Existing routes are now better connected, giving walkers more opportunities to experience the diversity of Texel: from the dunes near the Lighthouse and De Cocksdorp, to the historic cultural landscape of the Hoge Berg and the picturesque streets of Den Hoorn. The routes are now signposted with the distinctive Walking Network posts and signs.
Collaboration
The expansion of the Walking Network was made possible financially by the Province of North Holland, the Municipality of Texel, the Texel Tourism Investment Fund Foundation (STIFT) and VVV Texel. The walking trail was realised thanks to close collaboration between VVV Texel, Recreatie Noord-Holland, the Municipality of Texel, Staatsbosbeheer, Natuurmonumenten, ANLV De Lieuw Texel and the Central Government Property Agency. Various Texel-based business owners, leaseholders and farmers also support the network by welcoming walkers onto their land or to their various catering establishments.
