Waterline Trail

The Waterline Trail is a 350-kilometre walking route that starts in Edam and runs alongside two former defensive lines: the Defence Line of Amsterdam and the New Dutch Waterline. The walks are steeped in history and take you through (future) UNESCO World Heritage sites. And although you are always close to the Randstad, you walk continuously through beautiful countryside.

No other Long-Distance Walking Trail (LAW) showcases the defence lines as well as this route. The many forts, bunkers, locks and canals tell the story of water as an ally in the defence of the Netherlands. The forts were closed to the public for years, but have now opened their doors. Many of the 95 forts you pass have been transformed into welcoming stopping-off points where you can enjoy a drink, a bite to eat or an overnight stay.

It’s a very special experience to walk the Waterliniepad in one go. But the different walking stages can, of course, also be tackled separately. They are perfect walks for discovering sections of the two defence lines throughout the year. Put on your walking boots and discover the Netherlands’ greatest secret.
