Den Helder is a town in the north of the province of North Holland, on the North Sea coast. The town lies at the point where the Netherlands almost ends, offering views across the sea and the Wadden Sea. Thanks to this location, Den Helder has a strong connection to the water, the harbour and shipping. The town is known for its fresh sea air, wide beaches and dunes. History
Den Helder has a long and remarkable history. Due to its strategic location by the sea, the town was once very important for the defence of the Netherlands. That is why forts and defensive works were built. Many historic buildings and monuments can still be found in the town and surrounding area, serving as reminders of this period.
Den Helder in the Second World War
Den Helder played an important role during the Second World War. The town was part of the German Atlantic Wall, a major line of defence along the coast of Europe. Den Helder was bombed more than 170 times, resulting in the destruction of a large part of the town. Many residents had to temporarily leave their homes.
