Steeped in history
The first settlements began to emerge in the area now occupied by Enkhuizen as early as the year 1000, and in 1356 the town was officially granted town privileges. During the Dutch Golden Age, Enkhuizen grew to become one of the largest and wealthiest towns in Holland, partly thanks to trade and the establishment of important trading posts of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). This period has left a lasting impression in the form of impressive monuments and historic buildings that you can still admire today.
Highlights and sights
Enkhuizen boasts many highlights that attract visitors: the Zuiderzee Museum showcases life around the former Zuiderzee and combines an indoor and outdoor museum, whilst historic gates such as the Drommedaris and Koepoort serve as reminders of the town’s former defences. The beautiful Westerkerk, the stately town hall and countless other monuments also characterise the old townscape. As well as culture and history, Enkhuizen offers a surprising number of lovely shops, events and a friendly atmosphere for a day out or a weekend break.
