Heemstede

Gemeente Heemstede

A village with a green history

Heemstede exudes tranquillity, history and nature. A village has stood here on the banks of the Spaarne since the Middle Ages, and stately country houses and estates later sprang up in the area. Along the Herenweg, historic estates such as Huis te Manpad, Ipenrode and De Hartekamp serve as a reminder of the days when wealthy Amsterdammers built their country retreats here.

Not far from there lies the Groenendaal walking forest, a popular nature reserve covering some 80 hectares. Once part of various estates, it is now a green space where history and nature converge amongst avenues, ponds and monumental trees.

Exploring the countryside

Heemstede invites you to explore at your own pace. Take a stroll through the Groenendaalse Bos, cycle past historic estates, or discover the village’s peaceful avenues and parks.

The routes take you past stately villas, leafy avenues and hidden spots where you can slow down for a moment. Along the way, there’s always time for a break: a cosy terrace, a local shop or a quiet spot in the park.

Nature, heritage and relaxation

The green estates form the heart of Heemstede. Many of these country estates were established in the 17th century, when wealthy merchants from Amsterdam sought out the edge of the dunes for peace and fresh air.

Today, these historic sites are still visible in the landscape. They give the village its character: a unique combination of heritage, nature and space.

Everything within easy reach

Heemstede is compact and easy to navigate, yet rich in experiences. Shopping, walking and enjoying culture are all within a short distance of one another here.

What’s more, the surrounding area is full of possibilities. Within minutes you can be in the historic centre of Haarlem, in the dunes or on the beach. In this way, Heemstede combines the tranquillity of a green village with the vibrancy of the region.

Heemstede is stylish and welcoming, with a relaxed atmosphere and a strong focus on nature and quality of life. Choose your route and discover for yourself why this village is such a special place in Zuid-Kennemerland.
