A village with a long history
Welcome to Heiloo, a place where you can truly unwind. Surrounded by greenery, history and open space, you’ll immediately sense the serene atmosphere that has characterised the village for centuries. It is no coincidence that Heiloo has been a popular place of pilgrimage since the Middle Ages, a place for reflection and experience. But Heiloo is more than just tranquillity. Amidst woods, country estates and monuments, you will discover a village that sparkles with culture, nature and hospitality.
Well worth a visit
Heiloo is situated on an ancient beach ridge, which gives the village its distinctive topography, history and character. As you stroll through the leafy avenues, you’ll discover traces of the past in stately country houses, monumental trees and charming courtyards. Visit the three beautiful estates: Nijenburg, Willibrordus and Ter Coulster. The Nijenburg Estate exudes a 17th-century atmosphere, with its white country house, old beech avenues and the adjacent Heilooërbos: ideal for a relaxing stroll. Willibrordus Estate, recognisable by the green cross on the Cultuurkoepel, is now a vibrant site brimming with art and culture. At Ter Coulster Estate, you can experience pure tranquillity amongst ancient avenues and orchards.
A visit to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a must. This largest place of pilgrimage in the Netherlands features chapels, a healing spring and the atmospheric Oesdom. In the heart of the village, you’ll find the characteristic White Church of Heiloo.
A lovely stroll through Heiloo
As well as peace and nature, Heiloo offers a surprising amount of liveliness. The village has three charming shopping areas – ’t Hoekstuk, the Stationscentrum and the covered ’t Loo – where you can enjoy a spot of shopping, even on rainy days. The hospitality scene is also varied and welcoming. From cosy cafés and sunny terraces to atmospheric restaurants where you can enjoy a leisurely dinner. Treat yourself to an artisanal ice cream at Di Fiorentina or Pinoccio, or enjoy a good glass of wine and a tasty dinner in the evening.
Whether you’re coming for a walk through the Heilooërbos, a cultural visit to the Cultuurkoepel or a moment of reflection at Onze Lieve Vrouw ter Nood: in Heiloo you’ll find the tranquillity of yesteryear combined with the hospitality of today.
