The most famous catamaran race in the country: hundreds of catamarans sail around a Wadden Island as fast as possible in one day. Amateurs and international top sailors sail together. For spectators, the mass start from the beach is a spectacular sight. Around the race, there is a festival with music and other water sports.
A race against wind and current
This sailing race has existed since the late seventies and has grown into the largest catamaran race in the world. The catamarans depart simultaneously from the beach on the North Sea side. They must pass the lighthouse on time, otherwise they will face the current and have to give up. After that, they sail through the Wadden Sea and the tidal inlet back to the finish.
More than just the race
In addition to catamarans, windsurfers and wingfoilers also participate. During the same period, there is a water sports festival on the beach with music, food, and drinks. The start time depends on wind and tide and is only announced on the morning of the race.
Watching from the beach
The mass start is the best moment to see. After about three hours, the first sailors cross the finish line. The race can also be followed live via local radio.
