A charming town
Monnickendam is a charming town on the Gouwzee, where history and charm go hand in hand. Monnickendam was granted town privileges as early as 1355 and went on to become an important trading and port town. A stroll through the narrow streets, past historic buildings and distinctive gable stones, takes you straight back to the Golden Age.
Towering above the rooftops is the Waterlandsmuseum De Speeltoren, a real eye-catcher and the place to be to discover more about the origins of the Waterland landscape and the region’s history. The Grote Kerk, which is open during the summer months, is also well worth a visit.
In the cosy inner harbour, you can enjoy the view over the water and the historic ships whilst relaxing at one of the charming cafés and restaurants. Here, you can soak up the town’s laid-back atmosphere.
In July and August, Monnickendam really comes to life during the Monnickendammer Visdagen. With fish smokehouses, demonstrations, boat trips and a lively market, you can experience the rich history of the Zuiderzee up close.
