Where the Koemarkt remains the beating heart

Purmerend is surrounded by polders and has a rich history as a trading and market town. The town has grown from a small settlement into a town of almost 100,000 inhabitants and is still growing. Purmerend is a vibrant place where history, the present and the characteristic polder landscape of South Holland come together. For walkers, Purmerend is an ideal starting point for exploring both the town and the surrounding countryside. Following the merger with the municipality of Beemster in 2021, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Beemster Polder and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Defence Line of Amsterdam, comprising five forts located in the Beemster, now form part of the municipality. The Beemster is unique in that it was the first large-scale landscape to be reclaimed in the Netherlands. This makes Purmerend the perfect place for walkers to spend time in the town of Purmerend whilst also enjoying the vast polder landscape of the Beemster.

A town with a market heritage

In the centre of Purmerend, the squares, historic buildings, the Koemarkt and the canal network serve as a reminder of its past as an important market town and fortified settlement. For centuries, farmers from the surrounding area came here to trade their produce at the famous cattle markets. During a stroll through the centre, you’ll pass through characteristic streets, old buildings and charming squares where history is still palpable. The links to the market are still there: in Purmerend’s town centre, the weekly market can still be visited on Tuesdays, and markets are held on various days of the week in the city’s neighbourhoods.

Purmerend occupies a unique position; thanks to its combination of urban and rural areas, Purmerend has plenty to offer all kinds of walkers. Fancy a short stroll through the town centre?
