Viewing and enjoying the bulb region from the water adds a completely new dimension to the famous Dutch splendor of color.
This nearly 49-kilometer-long tour through the beautiful landscape surrounding Leiden starts at the Galgewater, a section of the Oude Rijn that derives its name from the many gallows that used to stand along this water. A significant part of the route then runs through the Kagerplassen, of which Het Joppe and Zweiland form the main components and were partly created by sand extraction a few decades ago. Some lakes reach depths of up to 30 meters, resulting in very specific bank vegetation and expansive views as an attractive feature. After the turning point near Lisse, the route continues south via the Leidse Vaart, part of the Haarlemmertrekvaart, the centuries-old original waterway between Amsterdam and Haarlem, on which flourishing trade took place during the Golden Age via intensive towboat traffic. This waterway is extremely suitable for pleasure boating, contains many whitefish and carp, and is therefore also popular with sport fishermen. Numerous beautiful bridges and resting spots ensure that this attractive route is popular with boaters, with the many colorful backdrops acting as an additional favorable factor. Via the Maandagsche Watering near Noordwijk, we sail back onto the Rhine near Valkenburg to return to the center of Leiden.
