Hop on your bike and let yourself be surprised by the unique Zeevang Route, an adventurous 34-kilometer tour through the special landscape of Laag Holland. This route takes you below sea level, through historic polders and past picturesque ribbon villages, allowing you to experience how people and water have coexisted here for centuries. You will discover the rich history of this area, from the battle against the water to the defense of Amsterdam, and enjoy the peace and nature so characteristic of the Kop van Noord-Holland.
You cycle through a vast polder landscape that was once threatened by the Zuiderzee, a landscape full of elongated grasslands and wide ditches. Along the way, you pass the imposing forts of the Amsterdam Defence Line, such as Fort Kwadijk and Fort Benoorden Purmerend, silent witnesses to a glorious past. The route also leads you through charming villages like Middelie and Kwadijk, where time seems to have stood still. Your eyes scan the fields for meadow birds such as black-tailed godwits and lapwings, which can be seen and heard in abundance here in the spring. A highlight is the monumental Zuiderzee town of Edam, where you feel transported to the Golden Age amidst the old merchant houses and picturesque canals. At Visitor Centre De Breek, you even cycle over the lowest point in North Holland!
