Lisse has the reputation, but the largest fields of flower bulbs are located in the northernmost part of North Holland. Spring is a beautiful time to explore this stage. Some farmers have opened their paths to walkers. Consequently, the North Holland Trail runs straight through the bulb fields.
Beautiful flower bulbs
Anna Paulowna is the last polder in the Netherlands constructed with private funds and has been the main town of the municipality of Hollands Kroon since 2012. Long, straight roads and beautiful farmhouses define the landscape here. And, of course, flower bulbs, as this area is the largest flower bulb production region in the world and a colorful landscape in the spring. The route crosses the grounds of a former bulb company and cuts straight through the fields. It is important to stay on the paths while walking. Naturally, this is to protect the flower bulbs from destruction, but above all to prevent them from coming into contact with viruses. Picking the flowers is also not permitted.
Oldest small lock in Europe
The next village, Oudesluis, was also formerly situated on an important sea route. You walk past the oldest lock in Europe and the accompanying lock keeper's house. The Cultuurkerk in this dike village is worth a visit. From here, the route continues along the grass dike to Wieringerwaard, a typical North Holland village with a white church, monumental farmhouses, and a 50-meter-high old water tower. At De Hoop windmill, you can stop for a cup of coffee on Wednesdays when the miller is at work.
