Windmills, the vastness of the landscape, and the preserved wooden houses, barns, and warehouses from earlier times, characteristic of the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century, form the backdrop of the route.
The starting point of this relatively short yet beautiful route lies at Lake Uitgeest, after which the River Zaan is soon reached, which determines the rest of the route. Passing through villages such as the former island of Marken, West- and Oostknollendam, and Krommenie, the recreational walker looks out onto a historically very interesting horizon, characterized by former industrial activity. Also characteristic of this area are the vast meadows bordered by ditches, naturally an ideal environment for countless water and meadow birds. The route has its turning point at the tributary De Poel in Zaandijk, after which the fascinating return journey can be undertaken, featuring once again beautiful spots hidden in reed beds and jetties. Upon viewing the many characteristic features along the banks, it quickly becomes clear why this region has often served as the backdrop for films and documentaries. Dutch cloudy skies and leafy spots do their best here to please every tourist, and the concept of Holland as a land of water is fully expressed here.
