For centuries, the Vecht was important to the Dutch Water Lines. For the northern part of the defense lines, the river formed the backbone that supplied the water to inundate the surrounding areas.
Now you can wonderfully explore the winding river, surrounded by leafy areas full of forts, by canoe. From Muiden, you pass the fortifications of Muiden and Weesp, and many beautiful forts such as Uitermeer, Kijkuit, Nieuwersluis, Spion, Fort Maarsseveen, and Fort de Gagel.
