Klaas Hoorn- en Kijfpolderroute

On this walk through the Klaas Hoorn- and Kijfpolder nature reserve, you stroll through meadows among cows and along the shores of the lake. A beautiful, not too long walk to clear your head and enjoy nature.

Peat meadow, birds and water

The route begins in the watersports village of Akersloot. From here, you walk via the marina to the shores of the Alkmaarder and Uitgeester lakes. In this typical peat meadow area, all kinds of plants grow, such as lesser celandine, orchids, and sundew. Birds fly back and forth: black-tailed godwits, curlews, ruffs, lapwings, and geese. On the water or among the reeds, you might hear and see wigeon, bitterns, bluethroats, and bearded tits. The sailboats and motorboats skimming across the water complete the picture.

Along the water and through the polder

A large part of the route runs along the lake. If you prefer walking with the wind at your back, that is possible, as the route is marked in both directions with blue arrows. Enjoy the sweeping views over the water on one side and the polder on the other. In the Klaas Hoorn- en Kijfpolder nature reserve, you walk through meadows, over small bridges, past cattle in the pasture and a specially constructed toad pond back to Akersloot. Tips: Pay a visit to Pumping Station 1879, which, together with the Noordermolen, maintains the water level in the Groot-Limmerpolder at the desired height. You will find a permanent exhibition by the Stichting het Oer-IJ on the top floor. Or take a look at the De Oude Knegt windmill. The mill rotates and grinds regularly, often on Saturdays, and is open to visitors then. For a bite to eat and a drink, you can visit the hospitality and recreation business 't Hoorntje in Akersloot.
