Naar het Rijk der Duizend Eilanden - Heerhugowaard

In Heerhugowaard, this walk passes through the headquarters of the Hollands Noorderkwartier Water Board (open during office hours). In a nice informative video, the water board talks about medieval peat reclamation, its consequences for the specific (watery polder) landscape here, and what that means for water management.

Afterwards, you walk to the picturesque village of Broek op Langedijk, with the former wooden boat auction, now a museum. Further on, you enter the 'land of a thousand islands', with numerous canals and waterways. Part of this unique landscape has been built upon, but even there, the original canal structure has remained beautifully intact.
