Noordzeewandeling Schoorlse Duinen – 10 km door duin, heide en strand

Walk 10 km through the Dunes of Schoorl: climb the highest dune staircase, enjoy the heath, Vogelmeer, and the North Sea beach. A varied ranger trail adventure!

Sea, dunes, forest and heath – all in one circular walk

The North Sea Walk is the quintessential ranger's trail of the Schoorl Dunes. In 10 kilometers, you will experience everything this special dune area has to offer: fragrant pine forests, vast purple heather fields, a bird lake in the middle of the dunes, and a wide North Sea beach. This is not a route that shows just one face – this is one that surprises you differently in every season.

Directions

You start at Buitencentrum Schoorlse Duinen at Oorsprongweg 1 in Schoorl. From here, follow the dark blue arrows. Soon, one item is on the agenda: the famous giant ladder. A tall wooden staircase with no fewer than 416 steps – each step featuring a donor's nameplate – takes you to the top of the highest dune in the area, 55 meters above sea level. At the top awaits the reward: a sweeping view over forest, heath, and polder stretching to the horizon.

Afterwards, you walk uphill and downhill along loose sandy paths past sand dunes and through pine forest. The lime-poor, almost white, glistening sand hurts your eyes on a sunny day. You reach the Vogelmeer, an elongated lake surrounded by heathlands and sand drifts. Once home to the largest common gull colony in Western Europe, it is now inhabited by swans, egrets, and dragonflies.

Further on, you follow quiet dune valleys, desolate yet enchantingly beautiful. After a half-hour climb, you finally see the North Sea glistening on the horizon. You descend through loose sand to the wide beach, walk a stretch along the surf at Beach Pavilion Paal 29, and return towards the starting point via wet dune valleys – restored in 2016 by Staatsbosbeheer. Here you hear the skylark singing and see sand lizards darting across the path. The visitor center, and a well-deserved coffee and cake at Brasserie IJgenweis, are then within easy reach.

Highlights along the way

  1. The Giant Ladder (55 m height) – 416 steps take you to the highest dune in the Netherlands, offering a beautiful panorama over forest and polder.
  2. The Vogelmeer – A photogenic lake surrounded by heath and sand drifts; home to swans, herons, and in the summer, plenty of dragonflies.
  3. The heather is in bloom (August) – The dune valleys turn purple like on the Veluwe; the highlight of the hiking season.
  4. North Sea beach at Paal 29 – After the climbing and descending, this wide beach is the perfect place to unwind. Beach Pavilion Paal 29 is open between March and September.
  5. Wet dune valleys – Restored in 2016; special plant species such as Parnassia and yellow heart, grasshoppers, bees, and skylarks.

Background story

The Schoorl Dunes are the widest dunes in the Netherlands and among the oldest. The white, gleaming sand is exceptionally low in calcium, allowing special plant and animal species to thrive that are rarely found elsewhere. Staatsbosbeheer actively manages this area: from the restoration of wet dune valleys in 2016 to the grazing of heathlands to prevent the heather from becoming overgrown. Every step in this landscape is one created by centuries-old dune nature in full operation.
