Rondje Wijk aan Zee is a 5.5-kilometre walking route through the landscape around the coastal village, set up by Vereniging Rondje Wijk aan Zee. The route offers a unique look at the past of Wijk aan Zee and leads alternately over paved and unpaved paths through high dunes.
An initiative by enthusiastic volunteers
Vereniging Rondje Wijk aan Zee was founded in 2012 by a group of volunteers who felt that there is more to see and do in Wijk aan Zee than just the beach. They laid out two walking routes: a loop around the village and a Dorpswandeling with historical photos from the Prentenkabinet, specially designed for people with limited mobility. The route can be followed via red-and-yellow signs and can be started at any desired point.
Past bunkers, lunettes and a beacon
Along the way, the walk passes a series of special historical points: a Radarbunker from the Second World War, the foundation of a beacon from 1600 and a lunette from 1800. Other walking locations include the Dorpskerk, the Paasduin, the Badgastenkerk, the Dorpsweide, the Natuurbelevingspad and the Relbeek. Every first Sunday of the month, from May to October, a concert takes place in the Dorpskerk from 1420 and the Radarbunker is open for visitors.
Dunes and dune pass
The southern route leads through high dunes, while the northern part runs partly through the Noordhollands Duinreservaat. A dune pass is required for this northern part, available at the Spar on the Verlengde Voorstraat and at the vending machine at the entrance to the PWN area on the Meeuwenweg.
