Walk 13.8 km along the Spaarne in Haarlem: from Schoteroog via De Adriaan Mill and the Gravestenenbrug, back via the quiet Parkwijk to the Veerplas.
Haarlem at its finest
The Spaarne Route (orange) is a varied city walk of nearly 14 kilometers through the heart of Haarlem and the green edges of South Kennemerland. You walk along one of the most beautiful city rivers in North Holland, discover the characteristic Schoteroog, and pass icons such as windmill De Adriaan and the Gravestenenbrug. This route shows how nature, water, and urban heritage seamlessly blend together in Haarlem.
From Schoteroog through the city and along the Spaarne
You start at the Veerplas, a recreational area on the edge of Haarlem. Soon, you climb to the Schoteroog, a striking little hill with a unique view over the city. Here, you can see at a glance how Haarlem is nestled between dunes and polder. Afterwards, the route descends to the banks of the Spaarne, the river that gives Haarlem its character. You walk deeper and deeper into the city, past canals and monumental buildings, while the sounds of the city slowly envelop you.
The highlight of the urban route is passing by De Adriaan windmill, a beautifully restored post mill right on the water. A little further on, you pass the Gravestenenbrug, one of Haarlem's most striking drawbridges. The bustling city life around you makes this part of the walk lively and surprisingly atmospheric. You can take a break on the terrace of a traditional pub or a modern café along the Spaarne and take in Haarlem's city life.
The return journey takes you via the Zomervaart and the Fuikvaart, two green waterways that lead you through the Parkwijk. Here, you exchange the busier city centre for a quieter, residential part of the city. Along the water, you can hear seagulls and swallows, and in the spring, the banks along the canals bloom in colour. This brings you back to the Veerplas, the starting point of your tour.
Highlights along the way
- Schoteroog — A striking elevated point at the start of the route with a surprising panorama over Haarlem, the dunes, and the polder. A place known almost exclusively to locals.
- De Adriaan Mill — Beautifully restored post mill directly on the Spaarne, open to visitors and an icon of the Haarlem cityscape. The mill rotates regularly on weekends.
- Gravestenenbrug — Characteristic steel drawbridge over the Spaarne with a striking green silhouette. A popular photo location and symbol of the water city of Haarlem.
- Zomervaart and Fuikvaart — Two tranquil bodies of water that lead you through the green Parkwijk, far away from the tourist hustle and bustle. During the breeding season (April–June), they are valuable bird habitat.
- Veerplas — Recreational lake on the edge of Haarlem, surrounded by greenery. Starting and ending point of the route, and a nice place to relax afterwards.
Water, wind and a city full of stories
The Spaarne has been the lifeblood of Haarlem for centuries. Along this water, goods were traded, beer brewed, and ships built. De Adriaan Mill once stood in the midst of an active industrial landscape. The current mill is a reconstruction from 2002 — the original burned down in 1932. The route along the Zomervaart and Fuikvaart shows how Haarlem has transformed its waterways into a green recreational zone, without losing its historical character.
Tips and practical information
