The Stierop Route takes you through peaceful polders, a vast nature reserve, and among other water sports enthusiasts and boats on the Markervaart and the Uitgeestermeer.
Peace and space
This yellow-marked canoe route starts at the surfing shore of the Zwaansmeer recreational area on Lake Uitgeest. You can also start at the boarding point on the Lagendijk near De Aker canoe rental. The (route) variant with the yellow border leads you to the main route. You paddle along the shores of the lake and through the Krommenieër-Woudpolder, a vast and tranquil peat meadow area where you can hear many meadow and reed birds such as the reed bunting, the sedge warbler, and the reed warbler.
Busy traffic
Just before you paddle onto the Markervaart from Krommeniedijk, you pass the De Woudaap windmill from 1651, which is still in use. The lock next to the windmill opens onto the Nauernasche Vaart. It is a lovely spot for a picnic and a short rest with a view of the passing boats. Behind the dike of the Markervaart lies Markenbinnen with the fort of the same name, which is part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. At the Stierop, you pass a scouting centre where it is pleasantly busy on and by the water in the summer. On the opposite bank lies the Westwouderpolder, a special little island where, especially in spring, you cannot miss the herons, shoveler ducks, black-tailed godwits, redshanks, and reed warblers.
