8.5 km circular walk through the West Frisian polders near Opmeer and Hoogwoud, past the national monument Wipbrug and polder mill De Vier Winden.
Quiet polders, old windmills
The Lage Hoek Loop (purple) takes you through one of the quietest and most authentic corners of West Friesland. This 8.5-kilometer circular walk starts from De Weijver recreation park near Hoogwoud, in the municipality of Opmeer. You walk through an open polder landscape full of ditches, meadows, and farmland — an area far from being discovered by everyone. That is precisely what makes it so special.
From polder to polder, along water and windmills
You start at De Weijver and soon head towards the open farmland. Shortly after setting off, you feel the spaciousness of the landscape: broad skies above green meadows, the sound of waders and lapwings taking flight from the grasslands. The typical West Frisian polder ditches accompany your route like silent guides.
Halfway through the walk, you pass the Wipbrug , a national monument that serves as a reminder of the water management that has kept this low-lying land habitable for centuries. A little further on, you encounter polder mill De Vier Winden , which was built in 1891 to replace an earlier mill that burned down due to a lightning strike. The mill stands calmly and imposingly in the landscape, as if time moves a little slower there than elsewhere.
Afterwards, you walk along the Langereis , a waterway that cuts through the polder area and provides a beautiful view over the lowlands. You complete the loop around the Lage Hoek via the Koningspade — a route that perfectly encapsulates the tranquility of this area. Back at De Weijver, you will have completed a short but impressive walk through a part of North Holland that has its own atmosphere and pace.
Highlights along the way
- Swing Bridge — This national monument is tangible proof of centuries of struggle against the water. The swing bridge is a characteristic element of the West Frisian polder landscape and a real eye-catcher.
- Polder Mill De Vier Winden — Built in 1891 after a fire. The mill still pumps away water and stands as a symbol of the West Frisian ability to shape the land.
- The Langereis — A wide waterway that crosses the polder area. Beautiful to walk along, especially in the spring when the sand martins are active.
- Koningspade — The peaceful final chord of the route: a polder path that brings you back to the starting point.
Polders that do not exist by themselves
De Lage Hoek is part of the West Frisian polders, a landscape that has been created and maintained by people over the centuries. In the past, there were peatlands here that were gradually drained for agriculture. The land subsequently subsided further, meaning that water management has always remained crucial. Windmills like De Vier Winden played a key role in this. Anyone walking through this landscape walks through living heritage.
