It is possible to extend your boat trip with a visit to Fort K'ijk, which is located close to the lake. In the past, the area around the fort was flooded whenever there was a threat of war. The fort was built in a vulnerable location as an extra defense. The meadows surrounding this fort are currently rich in meadow birds. Part of the area is flooded in early spring, turning it into an oasis for these birds where they can fully regain their strength after the winter and forage.
