Leave the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam behind by bike and discover the vast Waterland! Winding dikes and roads lead you through the flower-filled landscape and past cozy villages such as Durgerdam, Holysloot, and Zuiderwoude.
Hop on a bike at Amsterdam Central Station and escape the hustle and bustle of our capital. Cycle across the Schellingwouderbrug and before you know it, you will find yourself in an oasis of tranquility. The vast Waterland stretches out before you with its open peat meadow landscape, where ancient channels of the peat rivers Ae and Die meander through the scenery.
Via equally winding dikes and roads, you meander through a flower-rich area, with endless grasslands, swaying reeds, and numerous pools. In the small villages you encounter along the way, such as Durgerdam and Holysloot, the typical Waterland houses and bridges transport you back in time.
Halfway along the route, you cycle into the village of Zuiderwoude. It is a so-called ribbon village where houses used to be built side by side on a dike. This elevation was necessary because, at the time, the peat here held water like a sponge. However, the area was drained and the peat subsided. What remains is a historic farming village with beautiful farmhouses and wooden houses surrounding a lovely church. Feel free to stop along the way at the beautiful spots you come across and enjoy!
